Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer...

I am not a dancer. Well, I mean, the dogs and I do sometimes engage in interpretive dances when no one is around to see us (in particular I find that Bubbles' daily Happy Happy Wet Food Dance is most delightful and astonishing). But in general, dancing is not my thing. And for a long time I didn't "get" dance performances. But I've been in this town long enough, and I've seen some amazing shows and now, people? I get it. I am especially fond of the Blue Lapis Light company and their daring aerial performances. Great news-- BLL has a new show, DEVOTION, coming right up. Ballet Austin, in cahoots with Califa Arts Collaborative also has a series coming right up. Below for your reading and scheduling pleasure you'll find info on both sets of performances. Enjoy.

HERE'S A LITTLE INFO ABOUT THE SHOW:
The Program:

Four brand new works are being created for the show, each featuring a choreographer with dancers, a visual artist or artists, and musicians. The show will begin with a compelling collaboration between Choreographer Jennifer Hart and Photographer Nadine Latief. Set to the music of Max Richter, Hart’s choreography explores life’s journeys, specifically the journey we take to build relationships. Her work started as an expression of each dancer and their personal views of themselves and was built into a work of art that shows not only how these views can be expressed through movement but also how they can be captured in still shot through Latief’s photography. This piece truly highlights the inspiration that can be created through collaboration and features the communication that can be built between various avenues of art.

Devotion
June 15th-19th and 23rd-26th, 2011 9:00pm
Power Plant Intake Building on Lady Bird Lake
(with audience seating on boats and on the opposite shore- see map below)

Devotion is a new site-specific aerial dance dedicated to the waters of the Earth, featuring dancers suspended over the water with harnesses and bungees. Since 2006 Blue Lapis Light has transformed prominent and historic buildings in downtown Austin into uplifting works of beauty.

Devotion follows the ongoing mission of Blue Lapis Light to create original, transcendent works that become visual moving prayers for the planet. Gravity defying dancers touch the soul, creating beauty, wonder and possibility. These site-performances bring focus to a location, its history, its community and its architecture. Blue Lapis Light's aerial works are etched in the memories of demolished buildings, on downtown structures, and in the audiences who have witnessed these performances.
